Although a country of over just 800,000 people, 35% of Guyanese live on less than USD $5.50 per day. This especially impacts the indigenous Amerindian villages. As a result, the youth in these villages often battle with considerable mental health issues and feelings of extreme hopelessness.
In response to this, we are working alongside the Guyanese government to help address the high suicidal rate in the country, especially within the Amerindian villages, with the express purpose to help young people to develop a personal, vibrant relationship with God. We also are seeking to train young men and women to become confident, godly leaders in both the church and workplace.
Joining with our partner global workers Amar and Nadi Ram, we oversee the spiritual mentorship/leadership component of our “Automotive Electrical, Diagnostics and Repairs” course. This course gives young men and women an opportunity to learn essential job skills to help lift them out of poverty.
Our daily activities also include befriending and building relationships with our community members, giving hope to suicidal clients, and instilling solid biblical truths into the lives of young people and children.
I (Colin) pastored three congregations in the Eastern Ontario and Nunavut District over the course of 38 years. I (Dorselie) had a successful banking career for over three decades while providing leadership to women’s and senior’s ministries over the years. We will have been married for 48 years and have three adult children: Osmyn, Alexander, and Monique. We are also blessed with four wonderful grandchildren: Jasmine, Josiah, Gabriel, and Matthew.
